Trump endorses man who entered politics because of trans woman

Donad Trump and Amir Hassan

President Donald Trump has endorsed Michigan Republican Amir Hassan in his campaign for the state’s 8th Congressional District, throwing his support behind a candidate who says he only became politically active after a transgender woman used the same restroom his young daughter was in.

In a December 2025 interview with the Midland Daily News, Hassan recalled the event, which had happened years ago and said the experience marked the moment he “drew the line” and motivated him to enter politics.

His endorsement from Trump on Truth Social Tuesday night (28 July) praised Hassan as someone who would “NEVER LET YOU DOWN!” with the president offering his “Complete and Total Endorsement” in the closely watched congressional race.

Trump’s endorsement sparked criticism from some Republican supporters because Hassan is Muslim. Several commenters underneath the post argued that Muslims, non-Christians and “foreigners” should not hold elected office, despite Hassan being born in Flint, Michigan, and previously serving as both a law enforcement officer and military veteran.

Hassan’s website lists “Protecting our Children from Indoctrination and the Far-Left Agenda” among his priorities, where he states: “The radical gender ideology of boys becoming girls, using girls bathrooms, and playing girls sports has got to stop. Amir wholeheartedly supports President Trump’s common sense agenda of ending woke DEI nonsense, and defunding these radical ideologies – and will join that fight in Congress to protect our children.”

Hassan argued in the 2025 Midland Daily News interview that parents should be able to avoid public schools that include lessons on sexual orientation or gender identity. Referring to Michigan education guidance recommending age-appropriate discussions of LGBTQ+ topics, he said families who object on religious grounds should be able to redirect taxpayer-funded education dollars elsewhere.

Hassan has also repeatedly targeted LGBTQ+ community events online. In one December 2025 Instagram post, he shared promotional material for a local Drag Queen Story Hour with the words “Left AGENDA” written across it and captioned the post: “Our children are their target.”

Hassan defended his comments after one social media user accused him of obsessing over LGBTQ+ people, responding that he was “a father that is fighting to bring change” rather than a politician.
