January Jones Just Got a Meaningful Tattoo

If there’s anything we know about celebs, it’s that they love wearing their hearts on their sleeves (or any other part of their body). Follow along as we track all the new celebrity tattoos 2020 has to offer. If 2019 was any indication, there are sure to be some absolute gems *and* some dubious decisions.

January Jones

We love a tattoo with meaning! Actor January Jones is the latest celebrity to add to her tattoo collection, debuting new ink on her inner forearm from celebrity tattoo artist Winterstone. “LOVE YOU MORE. So cool to tattoo this meaningful phrase on you @januaryjones,” the artist captioned a December 16 photo of the actor’s new ink, the phrase “love you more” in script. While we don’t know the *exact* meaning of the phrase, and why it’s so special to Jones, we love that she went for a sentimental addition to her tattoo collection.

Vanessa Hudgens

(Photo: Instagram/@vanessahudgens)

Vanessa Hudgens has some new ink, and she debuted it on the red carpet! The actor—who hosted the 2020 MTV Music & Video Awards on December 6—showed off her latest tattoo, a line of script on her shoulder blade, while walking the carpet at the event. The ink, which is teeny, tiny (seriously, we can’t even read it), was done by celeb artist Mr.K.

Something that delicate *must* be meaningful. *Puts on reading glasses*

Megan Fox

The number one rule when it comes to tattoos is never get your partner’s name inked on your skin. You know, because it’s permanent and relationships aren’t (at least not always). But what’s the rule about a partner’s nickname? Actor Megan Fox is going to find out. Making her red carpet debut with boyfriend Machine Gun Kelly at the American Music Awards on November 22, fans noticed some new ink on the actor’s collarbone, with many speculating it’s a tribute to her new boo.

The tattoo—which is written in lowercase script—is the word “el pistolero,” Spanish for “the gunman.” The gunman. Machine Gun Kelly. Get it?

Congrats to the happy couple for taking their relationship to the next level—the epidermis level, that is.

Sophie Turner

We love a good sentimental tattoo! On November 19, fans noticed that new mom Sophie Turner had added some new ink to her ever-growing collection. In a series of Instagram Stories, folks spotted the letters “J” and “W” on the Game of Thrones actor’s wrist, a subtle tribute to her husband Joe and daughter Willa.

While the couple kept Turner’s pregnancy largely under wraps, only confirming it after their daughter’s birth in July, it seems they’re more than willing to share their happy news now.

Bella Hadid

Model Bella Hadid is celebrating her heritage with her latest ink. The model, whose father is Palestinian, had two phrases in Arabic tattooed on her shoulders by celeb artist Dr. Woo. “Some writings for the always kind and lovely @bellahadid,” Woo captioned a November 22 Instagram post showing off his latest work. According to several people in the comments of his post, the phrases mean: “I love you” and “my dear.”

We’ll wait for an official translation from Hadid herself; but until then, we’ll be ogling her seriously chic new ink!

Rob Kardashian

We always knew Rob Kardashian was a big softie! The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star has added to his extensive ink, with a touching tribute to his late father. On November 14, the Arthur George designer took to Instagram to share his latest tattoo, a portrait of Robert Kardashian. “Thank you brother!!” Kardashian captioned the photo, giving a shout out to the artist, Mister Cartoon.

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend

For many people, tattoos can be a sentimental addition to your body, and Chrissy Teigen and John Legend’s new ink is truly meaningful. On November 1, the Cravings author shared a photo of herself and husband John Legend on a date night, with a tiny new addition to her collection of body art. In a photo of the couple holding hands, Teigen revealed that she’d had the name Jack tattooed on her inner wrist. And in a post on November 2, celebrity tattoo artist Winterstone revealed that Legend has a matching tattoo, both done by the artist. On October 1, Teigen shared that she and Legend had lost their third child after suffering from pregnancy complications, just one month after announcing they were expecting. In a series of photos posted on social media, Teigen shared a powerful and heartbreaking behind-the-scenes look at the couple’s experience. And on October 27, the model shared a heart-rending essay about recovering from her loss. In Teigen’s October 1 post, she shared that the couple were planning to name their baby Jack.

Teigen and Legend’s latest tattoos are a beautiful tribute to their baby.

Hailey Bieber

(Photo: Instagram/@mr.k_tattoo)

The Biebers are known to wear their hearts on their sleeves when it comes to their love for one another, and now Hailey Bieber is wearing her heart on her ring finger. On October 19, tattoo artist Mr. K shared a post to Instagram highlighting Bieber’s latest ink. The model—who’s been married to singer Justin Bieber for two years—got the letter “J” alongside a star on her ring finger, in honour of her husband. Bieber also had the word “beleza,” which according to Mr. K means “beauty” in Portuguese, tattooed on her neck. “It was PLEASURE for your trust on this meaningful piece @haileybieber,” the tattoo artist captioned his post.

Joe Jonas

Joe Jonas is officially a wife guy, and he wants you to (low-key) know it. On October 13, Los Angeles-based tattoo artist Nal shared a photo of the Jonas Brother sporting some new ink—a keyhole on the back of his neck. While the ink is already cool enough featuring an eye and part of a face through the keyhole, fans were quick to point out that Jonas’s latest tattoo may also be kind of sentimental, with fans speculating that the obscured face is actually the singer’s wife, Sophie Turner. And we do have to agree that the face looks very similar to the Game of Thrones star.

Jonas’s latest ink comes just over a week after the singer debuted three new tattoos when wife Turner shared a candid photo of lunch with her husband. While some people may have been distracted by the singer’s hot pink hair (dyed at the beginning of October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month), eagle-eyed fans spotted a cluster of new tattoos on the new dad’s forearm; three designs that represent the principle “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.”

Kaley Cuoco and Zosia Mamet

Casts that get tattooed together…stay together? Kaley Cuoco and Zosia Mamet are putting that sentiment to the test. On October 12, the actors took to Instagram to share their latest ink, matching tattoos! The pair—who are co-starring in the upcoming HBO Max miniseries The Flight Attendant—got matching paper planes on their ankles to commemorate their time filming. “A special tribute to our wonderful little show,” Cuoco captioned a carousel of photos, showing herself and the cast being tattooed in New York City.

Matthew Koma

Well, this is definitely an alternative to wearing your heart on your sleeve. On September 21, musician Matthew Koma took to Instagram to show off his latest ink, and it’s a cheeky tribute to his wife, actor Hilary Duff. Literally—Koma had the name “Hilary” tattooed on one of his butt cheeks. “Good luck winning a fight with your wife when her name’s tattooed on your butt cheek,” he captioned the photo.

Justin Bieber

It seems like the Biebers are a fan of Dr. Woo! On September 7, just over a week after his wife debuted her latest addition from the celeb-famous tattoo artist, JBiebs took to Instagram to show off his own addition, a rose on the side of his neck. “@_dr_woo_ thank you for the [rose emoji],” Bieber captioned the photo.

The real question: Do we think it’s a Romeo and Juliet reference? Because *then* I would really be impressed.

Hailey Bieber

Hailey Bieber is showing off a delicate new hand tattoo. While it’s unclear when the dainty body art was actually done, the black line design on her right hand made its Instagram debut on August 30 when Los Angeles tattoo artist, Dr. Woo, tagged Mrs. Bieber in a pic of the ink with the caption, “Adding a bit more to the symbols on hand awhile back.” Woo is no stranger to celebrities—he has tattooed stars like Miley Cyrus, Kid Cudi, Cara Delevingne and Demi Lovato, not to mention is also the artist behind Hailey and her hubby Justin Bieber’s neck tattoos.

Kristin Cavallari

Big life changes deserve some sort of commemoration, so it makes sense that after recently filing from divorce from husband Jay Cutler, Kristin Cavallari would want to mark this period in her life. On August 25, the Laguna Beach star took to Instagram stories to share some BTS photos of her latest ink. The reality star added two über meaningful additions from celeb tattooist JonBoy, getting her children’s initials (CJS) in cursive script on her inner arm and a super dainty butterfly on her wrist.

(Photo: Instagram/@kristincavallari)

Of the butterfly tattoo, Cavallari wrote: “Butterflies have been such a sign for me when going through difficult times.”

We love this dainty and meaningful ink!

Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande is slowly but surely catching up to her ex-fiancé Pete Davidson when it comes to tattoos. Her latest addition? A flower on the palm of her hand. On August 24, eagle-eyes fans spotted Grande’s newest tattoo in a series of (masked) selfies the singer uploaded to Instagram. In one photo, in which Grande does the peace sign, you can spot a tiny flower in the palm of her hand. Edgy and cute? We love!

Kaia Gerber and Cara Delevingne

Model pals Kaia Gerber and Cara Delevingne just made their BFFship official with matching foot tattoos. Gerber showed off the twin ink on her Instagram stories on August 12 while wishing a happy birthday to her “solemate” Delevingne.

Riley Keough

Taking a cue from singer Shawn Mendes, actor Riley Keough debuted a tender new tattoo: her late brother’s name above her collarbone. Taking to Instagram stories on July 28, Keough shared an image of her freshly done ink—the name “Benjamin Storm” the cursive writing.

(Photo: Instagram/@rileykeough)

Benjamin Keough, the grandson of Elvis Presley, died by suicide on July 12.

Shawn Mendes

We already know that Shawn Mendes is a huge sweetie, so it should come as no surprise that the heavily tattooed singer would dedicate some ink to the people he loves. On July 26, Los Angeles-based tattoo artist Kane Navasard shared a sneak peek at the singer’s newest tattoo: his sister’s name, Aaliyah Maria, in delicate script under his collarbone.  “A sweet dedication, on the man @shawnmendes,” the artist captioned an image of Mendes’s tattoo.

We stan a sentimental heartthrob.

Shia LaBeouf

You can’t say Shia LaBeouf isn’t committed to his craft… In early January, director David Ayer told SlashFilm that the actor had gotten a real tattoo for his upcoming role in Ayer’s film, The Tax Collector—in which LaBeouf plays a mob collector. And now, fans can see just how extreme said dedication is: In July, the actor revealed his latest ink, an entire chest tattoo featuring the word “Creeper” (his character’s name), alongside a clown and woman gently pressing their foreheads together.

It’s…a lot. But congrats on the movie, Shia!

Halsey

On July 7, Halsey shared her latest tattoo with her Instagram followers, and it’s a super sweet tribute to the singer’s friend and collaborator, the late Jarad Anthony Higgins (a.k.a. Juice WRLD). In an Instagram story, Halsey shared a photo of what looks like her left hand, with the words “life’s a mess 999” tattooed just below her knuckles.

ICYMI, “life’s a mess,” refers to the title of a song off Juice WRLD’s upcoming album, which Halsey is featured on. The rapper—who died in December 2019 after suffering a seizure—had “999” tattooed on his own body.

Kylie Jenner

Kylie Jenner has often said that her daughter, Stormi Webster, is the best thing to happen to her, and now the makeup mogul is paying tribute to her mini me. On July 1, Jenner showed off her latest tattoo, the timestamp 4:43 inked on her forearm, in a series of Instagram stories from the set of a Kylie Cosmetics shoot. According to TMZ, 4:43 is the time Stormi was born.

Jenner also has STORMI inked on her tricep.

Cardi B

Cardi B has more fresh ink! On June 29, the “Bodak Yellow” rapper shared a photo of her latest body art, a butterfly tattoo on the back of her neck! While the butterfly is new, the tattoo was actually meant to cover up some old ink, the name “Samuel” on the back of the rapper’s neck.

This new addition to Cardi’s tattoo collection comes a few weeks after the rapper updated her iconic peacock hip tattoo. “So after ten years I gave my peacock tattoo a makeover. This whole week I been takin hours of pain getting tatted,” the rapper wrote in a June 15 Instagram post, alongside a photo of her updated ink.

In the post, Cardi shared side-by-side photos of her decade-old tattoo, highlighting the changes made, which included brightened colours, added details and a brand-new flower and butterfly alongside the peacock. The makeover was done by tattooist Jamie Schene. In May, the rapper also shared a video and photo of her then-latest (and probably biggest) tattoo–a floral motif that extends from the rapper’s right shoulder, across her back and butt and down her left thigh.

Post Malone

On June 21, the “Rockstar” rapper took to Instagram to share his latest ink with fans: a giant tattoo of a skeleton on the side of his head. “I have cut my hair even shorter, also skeletons are cool,” Malone captioned an up-close photo of himself. “Spread your heart as much as you can. A little love goes farther than you think. Stay strong, and keep kicking ass. Love, Austin.”

The rapper—who usually leaves his curly hair quite long—went with a super short buzz cut to show off his new tattoo.

Vanessa Bryant

Vanessa Bryant, the wife of late basketball star Kobe Bryant,  is showing off her latest tattoos, a tribute to Bryant and their daughter Gianna. The former Los Angeles Lakers player and 13-year-old Gianna died tragically on January 26 in a helicopter crash. ” I wanted my boo boo’s @kobebryant sweet messaged transferred on me,” Bryant captioned a June 9 Instagram video. In the video, Bryant can be seen getting a tattoo by artist Nikko Hurtado on her neck.

In another video, Bryant paid tribute to her late daughter with a tattoo on her wrist. “Shoutout to @nikkohurtado for coming over and helping me get my Gigi’s sweet message transferred on me,” she captioned the video.

Bryant didn’t share what exactly the messages *are* but they’re no doubt incredibly sentimental.

Hayden Panettiere

Returning to Instagram this week after a hiatus, Nashville actor Hayden Panettiere shared some personal photos with fans on June 8, including an image of her latest ink. “Newish ink #TheEyeOfRa,” Panettiere captioned a black and white photo of the new Egyptian symbols on the back of her neck.

The tattoo appears to be pretty meaningful. According to Just Jared, the Eye of Ra is seen as a form of protection in Egyptian culture. Panettiere has been in and out of the public eye since May 2019, when her then-boyfriend Brian Hickerson was arrested for domestic violence against Panettiere. In February 2020, Hickerson was arrested again after allegedly striking Panettiere when the couple were in Wyoming. It’s been a pretty tumultuous year for Panettiere, so we can’t blame her for wanting a little protection and good energy on her side.

Presley Gerber

Kaia’s model bro debuted a new face tattoo on March 17, adding the Los Angeles Dodgers’ logo to his left cheek.

Gerber also has a face tat by celeb tattoo artist Jon Boy—the word “MISUNDERSTOOD”—which he showed off in a February 7 IG post.

Vanessa Hudgens

Vanessa Hudgens has been blessing 2020 with a weekly “Thirsty Thursday” series on her IG and this week she had a fun new addition to her grid. On March 5, the singer and actor debuted her latest tattoo, a  piece just over her ribs that features a naked angel. “Divine feminine angel [] not me…my tat. But you can call me that, if you want to,” she captioned an Instagram photo of her new ink. The tattoo was done by popular artist Dragon and looks similar to a December 2019 tat Demi Lovato debuted that featured an angel being carried by doves. Which celeb do you think will go for a “divine feminine” inspired tat next?

Miley Cyrus

(Photo: Instagram/@mileycyrus)

On the same day Hudgens revealed her new tat, tattoo fiend Miley Cyrus shared a photo of *her* latest ink on the ’gram, taking to Instagram stories to share the new work by celeb-fave artist Winterstone. “For my siblings @brandicyrus @braisoncyrus @tracecyrus @noahcyrus #TNStrong,” the singer wrote alongside the image. The delicate ink includes a compass-like star pattern with each of her siblings initials. Cyrus’s ink comes only days after she debuted *another* new tattoo on March 2, a Matisse-esque line drawing of a female body on her upper arm, inspired by musician Leonard Cohen and artist Henri Matisse, the latter of whom has become recognizable for his fluid drawings of body forms.

Artsy, Miley!

Cody Simpson

(Photo: Instagram/@codysimpson)

Also showing off their new ink on March 5 was Cyrus’s BF, singer Cody Simpson, who shared a photo of his very own Winterstone tattoo on his Instagram stories: a tiny line drawing of King Neptune (who, according to Roman mythology, was the god of the sea).

Slick Woods

Slick Woods, the badass model who walked down Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty runway while pregnant AF, now has a tat that reads “prolific” above her left eyebrow. It was inspired by the late rapper Nipsey Hussle, whose tragic death last year sent waves of shock and grief through the music industry and beyond. Hussle was born in Los Angeles, just like Woods, and he famously had the same tat (with the same font!) on his right temple. “Nipsey made me do it,” Woods wrote in her IG caption. Hometown hero.

Orlando Bloom

When it comes to parents getting tribute tats for their kids we’re all for it. And Orlando Bloom is the latest celeb to jump on the tattoo tribute train. “New tattoo can you guess who?,” the actor captioned a February 12 Instagram photo of his arm.

But what might just look like a bunch of  dots and lines is actually a super sweet tribute to his son. Blooms’ newest tat is his son Flynn’s name in morse code. The only problem? It’s spelt incorrectly. As some eagle-eyed fans point out, the way the tat is now actually spells…”Frynn.” But don’t worry! According to Bloom’s tattoo artist, the pair will be fixing the tat ASAP.

Amber Rose

Some people wear their heart on their sleeves…and others wear it on their forehead. Model Amber Rose took being a proud mom to the next level over the weekend, debuting two forehead tattoos on February 7 that are a tribute to her children.

(Photo: YouTube)

In a YouTube video for Cool Kicks—an LA store that sells both new and used sneakers—the model is shown with the words “Slash” and “Bash” inked just below her hairline—a reference to her two sons Sebastian Taylor and Slash Electric Alexander Edwards.

All we can say is that with a commitment to your kids like *that,* Slash and Bash better take good care of their mom in her old age.

Justin Bieber

The Biebs is back at it with the tattoos (seriously, does this man ever let his skin rest?). After announcing his new album will be out February 14, he gave Instagram a sneak preview of the new laurel wreath inked on his collarbone. His IG Stories had a full-body shot, where we can fully see the goods.

So what do all those leaves mean? E! News pointed out that laurel wreaths have been “a symbol of triumph and mobility,” but the more likely bet is that it has a religious meaning, like many of his other tattoos. “Many [view] the wreath as a symbol of God’s victory and power,” they write. According to Cosmopolitan, an article from Old Dominion University suggests it’s a symbol “for those who persevere.”

A screencap from Justin Bieber's Instagram Stories showing his full body of tats, including a large laurel wreath along his collarbone.

Lebron James

Lakers star Lebron James is paying tribute to Kobe Bryant following the death of his former teammate and his daughter Gigi who perished tragically in a helicopter crash on January 26 along with seven other people. At a Lakers workout on January 30, James was seen sporting a fresh tattoo on his thigh that appears to be a black mamba, a reference to Bryant’s nickname. According to TMZ, some fans think it says “Kobe 4 Life” underneath, though it looks more like “Mamba 4 Life” to us. Fellow Lakers player Anthony Davis also got ink remembering Bryant.

Ariana Grande

It was easy to miss Ariana Grande’s new tat during her Cinderella moment at the Grammys on January 26. The singer debuted a wispy butterfly on her upper left arm, peeking out just above her full-length opera glove. Grande has already racked up quite a tattoo collection, although many are tiny and not flashy. Is this a sign of bigger, more noticeable ink to come in 2020?

Vanessa Hudgens

Just after the end of her nine-year relationship with Austin Butler, Vanessa Hudgens went for a dainty sunflower tattoo on her left side boob. The actor posted two pictures and a video on Instagram showing off her new ink, plus an Instagram Story with Swae Lee and Post Malone’s song “Sunflower” playing in the background.

The caption of her first post reads, “And to conclude our #thirstythursday Hahahahaha.” Dragon, a well-known tattoo artist at celeb fave NYC studio Bang Bang Tattoo, was tagged and even appeared in one of the pics.

Is it a coincidence that Hudgens chose a sunflower, which sometimes signifies adoration and loyalty, right after the end of her relationship with Butler? Maybe we’re reading too much into it, but…you never know.

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez’s newly released album Rare marks a new chapter for the singer, so it only makes sense that she’d commemorate the experience in the most permanent way possible—with a new tattoo. On January 16, Gomez took to Instagram to show off her latest ink addition, the name of her album in dainty script on her neck.

“Did it again…rare,” the singer captioned her post. Alongside a photo of the delicate new tat, Gomez also shared a video of herself in the tattoo studio posing for photos.

The tattoo was done by celeb tattoo artist Bang Bang, who is a fave of Rihanna and Cara Delevingne. The artist has tatted Gomez several times before, most recently inking the singer with a super religious thigh tattoo before her American Music Awards performance in November 2019.
