Ewan McGregor Just Made An Interesting Point About His Obi-Wan Kenobi I Hadn’t Mathed Out
The return of Obi-Wan Kenobi is currently nowhere among upcoming Star Wars movies and TV shows. And, apparently no one is more surprised than Ewan McGregor. In fact, the actor just called for more of his character (again). Plus, he brought up one big reason why it makes sense for the character to come back.
Ewan McGregor reprised the role of his Jedi Master for the 2022 series Obi-Wan Kenobi. The show earned mixed reviews from fans, but pretty much everyone agreed it was great to see the actor back in the Star Wars Universe. And the actor is simply waiting to yield that lightsaber again. In his words:
Come on! I’m ready whenever they are. They just seem to not be ready, I don’t know why. But, I’m up for it. I think at the end of the Obi-Wan series, I’m walking off into the desert. I’ve decided to leave. I’ve realized that I can’t just keep the pressure on Luke. So, I realize he has to have his own childhood. So, I leave him with Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru, and I wander off.
It’s not like Ewan McGregor has been shy about wanting to play Obi-Wan again before. A couple of years ago he shared hopes for Season 2 of the series that’s available to stream with a Disney+ subscription. The actor continued in the new interview by explaining why he thinks there’s plenty of story to tell that I hadn’t realized before. As he told E! News:

We go off, and I’m on the Eopie. But, where are we going? And then the next time we find Obi-Wan Kenobi, he’s Alec Guinness in the cave up in the mountains saying ‘Hello there.’ That bit. And, what happens between those two moments is what I want to do and spend the rest of my career doing these stories. Series or movies. And we’ve got plenty of time. I’ve got ten years before I’m Alec Guinness’s age. So, come on Disney!
Hey, he’s got me convinced! Ewan McGregor is talking about the finale of Obi-Wan Kenobi which occurs when Luke and Leia are both 10 years old. That puts almost a decade between the ending of the show and A New Hope. This leaves a gap of story for Obi-Wan Kenobi that’s yet to be explored.
Ewan McGregor is currently 55, which is getting close, but not quite where Alec Guinness was in A New Hope aka his early sixties. As McGregor points out, that gives Disney some time, but also makes now a great time for him to get back in the robe. I hope someone at Lucasfilm has seen this and is scrambling to get a writer’s team ready for an Obi-Wan Season 2… or a movie even! Especially since McGregor seems very interested in reprising his role.
At the moment, there’s only a few known Star Wars projects on the way. The only movie that’s been officially made and dated for release is Star Wars: Starfighter starring Ryan Gosling. We also know that Ahsoka Season 2 is well on its way and a Rey movie starring Daisy Ridley is still reportedly in development. Seems like as good a time as any for Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan to swoop in, doesn’t it?
