Darius Rucker Reveals He Might Retire Soon

Darius Rucker isn’t just tossing around the idea of the retirement. The 60-year-old singer has given serious thought, and a pretty quick timeline, to how he’ll wrap up his career.

Rucker was asked about retirement during a recent appearance on the Dan Patrick Show, and he got specific. Turns out, the singer’s planning to step away from full-scale touring sooner than most fans might think.

When Will Darius Rucker Retire?

Rucker thought about it, then answered confidently when host Dan Patrick asked him when he planned to retire. “Two years,” he said.

“I might,” Rucker continued. “I’ve been really looking at it, and I played 110 shows last year…I mean, what am I doing?”

“I still like making records and playing and everything, but I’m really starting to like being home a lot,” he goes on to say. “I like being home a lot.”

What Does Darius Rucker Want to Do Before He Retires?

Rucker has been a successful solo country artist since 2008, but he’s still well known as the frontman of rock group Hootie & the Blowfish, too. He says that he’ll conclude his career with that group.

“I’m looking at maybe doing a tour, one more big Hootie thing..if we call it, I gotta do one more Hootie thing,” the singer says. “‘Cause we have to finish at Williams-Brice Stadium. Our last show, when we say we’re done, it’s gotta be at Williams-Brice Stadium.”

That’s the stadium in Columbia, S.C. which is home to the South Carolina Gamecocks, and attached to the University of South Carolina — where Rucker was a student when he first met his Hootie & the Blowfish band mates. Many of their earliest gigs were on campus.

The stadium holds some special memories for the band. It was there, in 1996, that the members of Hootie helped bring Willie Nelson‘s Farm Aid after a handful of natural disasters impacted South Carolina’s farming community. They were among the performers that night, and performed with Nelson and his band onstage.

What Else is Going On With Darius Rucker?

He’s currently planning a wedding with his fiancée Emily Deahl.

The couple announced their engagement in October 2025, and during his newest interview, Dan Patrick revealed that Rucker and Deahl are planning to celebrate their nuptials next February in Charleston, S.C.

But Rucker hinted that that might just be their public celebration, and that the actual ceremony will be held privately. “That’s just gonna be the party,” he said during the interview.
