Midway through the second episode of Apple TV+’s sci-fi epic Foundation, mathematician Hari Seldon (Jared Harris) visits the laundry facilities on the spaceship carrying him and his followers to a far corner of the galaxy. Hari has developed the new science of “psycho-history,” predicting the future through statistical analysis, and he has convinced everyone on this ship, and in this room, of two things: 1) The Galactic Empire in which they all live is soon doomed to fall; and 2) Hari and his followers are the only ones who can...

‘Ted Lasso’ Recap: No Strangers to Love

A review of this week’s Ted Lasso, “No Weddings and a Funeral,” coming up just as soon as I fat-shame a baby to tears… The title of “No Weddings and a Funeral” is, of course, a nod to Richard Curtis’ breakthrough movie as a writer of rom-coms, Four Weddings and a Funeral. The episode includes a variation on the musical wedding scene from Curtis’ Love, Actually, plus some romantic developments involving both Keeley and Rebecca (and at least sexual developments for Ted with Sassy). But its most important and effective...

Alan Sepinwall: How Do You Solve a Problem Like the 2021 Emmys?

Last year’s Emmy haul for Schitt’s Creek was a historic one, as the Pop TV comedy became the first ongoing series to ever sweep all seven of the awards — the four acting categories, plus writing, directing, and Outstanding Comedy Series — presented in the primetime telecast. Because that night’s show largely covered one genre at a time, the sweep seemed even more dominant, since the first hour or so just kept cutting to the same Toronto venue where the Schitt’s cast and crew were remotely attending the pandemic-altered ceremony....

Emmys 2021: The ‘Coffin Flop’ of Awards Shows

The Emmys are always the Fredo Corleone of the Hollywood award-show crime family — they want respect, but they’re lucky if they get a little pity and/or the occasional banana daiquiri. They always get overshadowed by their glitzier, glammier, drunker siblings. But even by Emmy standards, the 73rd annual event was a tedious mess. If the entertainment scale has “Bowen Yang’s shoes” at one end, and “Dr. Phil comedy sketch” at the other, this long, dark night of the gold went off the charts all the way into “The Queen’s...
