Part of the origin of the story itself, within the context...

‘Candyman’: Nia DaCosta Talks Daniel Robitaille and the Social Relevance of the Candyman Legend [Video]

Conspiracy theories can be dangerous when taken at face value, especially now that the internet has made it hard for some folks to tell the difference between legitimate information and paranoid rambling. However, when used as a storytelling tool, conspiratorial thinking can also serve as a reminder about the merits of questioning authority and fighting back against an unfair status quo. This rebellious spirit is likely the reason why these theories have inspired so many great movies. From alien abductions to secret societies manipulating world events from behind the scenes,...

‘House on Haunted Hill’ Will Live in Glorious Infamy for Its Over-the-Top Theatrics [Revenge of the Remakes]

Series of Frights is a recurring column that mainly focuses on horror in television. Specifically, it takes a closer look at five episodes or stories — each one adhering to an overall theme — from different anthology series or the occasional movie made for TV. With anthologies becoming popular again, especially on television, now is the perfect time to see what this timeless mode of storytelling has to offer. The beach is that terminal stage before entering the water and possibly never returning. Lakes, oceans, seas — these unfathomable places...

‘Scream’: Directors Tease the “Unique Risks” and Franchise Easter Eggs You’ll Find in Next Year’s New Movie

Welcome to Revenge of the Remakes, where columnist Matt Donato takes us on a journey through the world of horror remakes. We all complain about Hollywood’s lack of originality whenever studios announce new remakes, reboots, and reimaginings, but the reality? Far more positive examples of refurbished classics and updated legacies exist than you’re willing to remember (or admit). The good, the bad, the unnecessary – Matt’s recounting them all. Would there be “The Great 2000s Boom” of horror remakes without William Malone’s pre-Y2K House on Haunted Hill trendsetter? Undoubtedly, but what’s...

Before ‘The Suicide Squad’ – ‘Tromeo and Juliet’ Set the Blueprint for James Gunn’s Absurd Humor and Lovable Characters

It’s not unusual for eras or decades of the horror genre to be categorized by one overarching theme or style. The eighties have become synonymous for their boom in low-budget, often sleazy, slasher films inspired by the cornerstone slashers of the mid-to-late seventies. The horrors of the 50s reflected cultural fears of science creating new monsters or humans facing threats from an unknown origin. Not so long ago, the 2000s — or the aughts — saw a weird meshing of the one-third remake craze; one-third gritty, nihilistic, Post-9/11 horror, and...

‘Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI’ Cast and Crew Reunite for 35th Anniversary [Video]

When writer-director Tom McLoughlin grabbed the wheel of the Friday the 13th franchise, he took it in a completely new direction. Five sequels in — and particularly following the polarizing reception to 1985’s Friday the 13th: A New Beginning — he knew the slasher series needed a fresh take. Something that could recalibrate the Jason Voorhees legend. What came to fruition was 1986’s Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI. From the get-go, the film makes it clear this isn’t your run-of-the-mill sequel. It’s self-aware of itself. It’s funny. It’s...

Stephen King Wrangled the Beast Within the “Lord of the Flies” [The Losers’ Club Podcast]

Before the Halloweenies head to Hollywood in August for Scream 3, they have some film courses to complete this summer at Windsor College. Fueled by a star-studded ’80s soundtrack and Sergio Stivaletti’s gory effects, this stylish slice of suspense tears the celluloid in half — literally. It’s a rollercoaster of a rental that redefined pop horror forever. For the latest installment of...
