Is the BookTok Reign Letting Up? A New Analysis Suggests That It Might Be

Publishers Weekly reported on a new analysis by BookScan that shows the current state BookTok’s influence on book sales. Since 2020, BookScan has been tracking around 180 BookTok authors and found that the group’s book sales went from 13 million copies sold in 2020 to 27 million sold in 2021. Federal Ruling Says that AI Art Can’t Be Copyrighted

The latest in the AI debate is a ruling delivered Friday by federal Judge Beryl Howell, which upholds a U.S. Copyright Office finding. The finding — and the federal ruling — both state that artwork created by AI can’t be copyrighted. This comes as people like CEO of Imagination Engines Stephen Thaler fight for works created by AI to be protected under copyright law. Thaler filed a lawsuit after the U.S. Copyright Office refused his request for artwork created by his computer system to be copyrighted. Thaler believes that AI should...

What is Happening with Books and AI?

I can no longer open my various inboxes without seeing something about AI: newsletters remarking on the success or failure of various AI tech and startups, urgent calls to explore AI tools designed for social media and content managers, headlines about how AI is being used in exciting and terrible ways across industries…So, while I hesitated before writing this piece and possibly contributing to your own AI-related spam, I can’t help but recognize that stories about AI’s effects on the book world are intensifying and worth paying attention to. Booksellers Want Justice Department to Investigate Amazon

As the Federal Trade Commission moves towards what looks like a lawsuit against Amazon, several authors, booksellers, and anti trust activists want Amazon’s bookselling to also be investigated. The Authors Guild, the American Booksellers Association, and antitrust think tank Open Markets Institute sent a letter Wednesday to the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission requesting that they disrupt the monopoly on the book market that Amazon has. The retail giant’s influence on the book world can’t be overstated — 40% of physical books sold in the U.S. are sold...
