Quiz: Which Brontë Heroine Are You?

Have you ever wondered which Brontë heroine are you? The Brontë sisters are one of my most enduring literary loves. I read Wuthering Heights and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall nearly every year, falling under the spell of these vibrant, captivating tales every single time. Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Brontë’s novels are characterized by their memorable heroines: love them or hate them, nobody who has read one of their books has forgotten Jane Eyre, Catherine Earnshaw, or Helen “Graham” Huntingdon, among others. The critics at the time were equal parts...

Remembering The Black Expressions Book Club

I was a teen when I started to recognize the importance of Black authors. I loved reading when I was younger but I didn’t have access to many fictional books that centered on characters that looked like me. Of course, all of that changed when I got my hands on books like Sister Souljah’s The Coldest Winter Ever and Liar’s Game by Eric Jerome Dickey. Once I discovered that there were Black authors making contemporary stories that spoke to my interests, I knew I wanted to read them all. Even...

Leander, Texas, School District Pulls Books from Reading List

After a months-long battle over “inappropriate” books on a student book club reading list, Leander Independent School District (LISD) in Texas has removed even more books from classrooms. In a February board meeting, the school board listened to LISD parents who complained about a wide range of titles on the list. The list, which contained 15 books from which students could choose, came under fire as some parents saw the options included to be inappropriate. Those titles were, of course, ones featuring queer relationships, stories of sexual assault and violence,...

Anti-Critical Race Theory Parents Fight THE HATE U GIVE

In most parts of the US, if public schools aren’t back in session, they will be soon. If fights about masking or not masking during a global pandemic and rise of the COVID-Delta variant weren’t enough, nor were protests against access to inclusive sexual education material, now teachers and librarians have to fight a third front. Opponents to Critical Race Theory (CRT) are flooding school and library board meetings, hoping to squash use of titles that explore anti-racism. Angie Thomas’s award-winning debut The Hate U Give is one such title...
