Ahead of the Super Bowl, the True to Texas initiative has released a headline-grabbing commercial of their own this week, which notably features Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson reprising their roles from the first season of “True Detective” to help spread the True to Texas mission statement: bringing film and television productions back to Texas.
Renée Zellweger, who of course co-starred alongside McConaughey in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, also appears in the commercial, alongside Billy Bob Thornton and Dennis Quaid. The star-studded ad runs 4-minutes long, and it’s interesting to note that it was directed by “True Detective” series creator/Season 1 director Nic Pizzolatto.
The official video description reads, “Why should Texas movies be made anywhere but Texas? Filming in Texas isn’t just about showcasing our stunning landscapes—it’s about creating jobs, boosting local economies, and building a thriving industry right here at home. Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Dennis Quaid, Billy Bob Thornton, and Renée Zellweger shine a spotlight on how Texas can lead the way in film production in this short film. Let’s keep the cameras rolling and the economy growing—because everything’s bigger (and better) in Texas!”
“Hollywood is a flat circle,” McConaughey muses in the ad, channeling his “True Detective” character Rust Cohle. The actors argue that Texas could become the new Hollywood, “a whole new hub for film and television… a renaissance, a rebirth.” McConaughey continues, “It’s not just films with A-list talent. It’s also the independents, commercials, local music videos.”
The ad was created by Texans in Texas, produced by Stray Vista Studios, George Lane, Nate Strayer and Zack Stauffer. Shot by Emmy nominated Cinematographer Jimmy Lindsey, ASC.
