‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Sequel Officially Enters Production
Production is officially underway on Sony’s I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel, announced via the film’s official social media account this morning. With it comes the reminder that the new film is set to release this summer.
The slasher franchise will return to theaters on July 18, 2025.
Plot details haven’t been revealed as of yet, but the original film follows four young friends who are separated by a tragic accident but reunited when they find themselves being stalked by a hook-wielding maniac in their small seaside town.
Freddie Prinze Jr. is confirmed to reprise his role from the original movies. If you need more proof, his wife, Sarah Michelle Gellar, jokingly teased a Scooby-Doo reunion on Instagram when sharing a behind-the-scenes photo from the I Know What You Did Last Summer set. Don’t expect that as confirmation that she’ll reprise the role of Helen Shivers, though. “I am dead,” Sarah Michelle Gellar flat-out answered when they asked if she’d be back in next year’s franchise reboot. But death isn’t permanent in horror, and there could be other ways the actor could contribute to this sequel.
Jennifer Love Hewitt is in talks to return as well. Billy Campbell, Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Haur-King, Lola Tung, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Austin Nichols, and Gabbriette also star.
Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) is set to direct the new installment in the franchise for Sony, with Leah McKendrick (M.F.A.) writing the original draft of the screenplay.
Jim Gillespie directed the original 1997 slasher, I Know What You Did Last Summer, which was written by Kevin Williamson (Scream) and based on Lois Duncan’s novel. The film spawned sequels in 1998 and 2006. Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. only came back for that first sequel. A direct-to-video third installment of the franchise, I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, is considered standalone with no returning cast members. More recently, the franchise returned with Amazon’s short-lived television series.
With production officially underway, expect to hear a lot more about this sequel in the coming months.
