How ‘The Voice’ Coaches Pulled Off ‘Put a Little Love in Your Heart’
“As cheesy as it might sound, we need as many love songs and community-building songs,” said Chance the Rapper
The coaches of The Voice knew exactly the song they needed to perform to kick off the new season.
Just weeks ago, judges Chance the Rapper, John Legend, Reba McEntire, and Dan + Shay came together for a powerful, uplifting rendition of “Put a Little Love in Your Heart” backed by a massive choir. On Wednesday, The Voice shared a behind-the-scenes video of how it all happened.
“We went with ‘Put a Little Love in Your Heart’ because that’s what the world needs right now,” said Chance in the video. “As cheesy as it might sound, we need as many love songs and community-building songs, and empathy songs as possible. That’s what this show does.”
The BTS video captures the artists at rehearsals ahead of the performance of the Jackie DeShannon 1969 classic “Put a Little Love In Your Heart” (which Annie Lennox and Al Green also turned into a hit in 1988).
“That was unbelievable. Just having the opportunity to sing with the coaches was a special opportunity and something we’ll never forget,” said Shay Mooney.
“The production was crazy,” added Dan Smyers.
McEntire shared that they filmed the recording five or six times but that she felt the group “get better” with every time. By the end? “It looked like we’d been touring together with that song,” she said. “I’m really proud of it.”
Season 25 of The Voice premiered Feb. 26 and sees the addition of Dan + Shay as the first “double chair” coaches.
