Bimini Bon Boulash has made an impassioned call for people to protect the “vulnerable” trans community from the heartbreaking “hate and stigma attached to them”.

Bimini, who is a fan favourite from the second series of Drag Race UK, has been praised by fans for their LGBT+ advocacy and non-binary representation. And Bimini hasn’t stopped fighting for trans rights since leaving Drag Race UK.

In an interview with Evening Standard, Bimini discussed what it has been like to be at the centre of trans and non-binary representation in the drag world after her appearance on the show. They said drag artists “don’t have to be political”, but what they do is “political” in a sense because “you’re going against what is expected of you and kind of mocking what’s going on”.

Bimini Bon Boulash said it is always important for them to have “your eye on what’s going on”, and they said the “roll-back on trans rights is scary”. They said there’s a “lot of good happening among the trans community, rallying together in allyship”, but there is also a lot of hurt and stigma that the community faces.

“I have a lot of trans friends, and they go through so much,” Bimini said. “Their journey is so different: they get all of this hate and stigma attached to them, and it’s really heartbreaking. We have to protect those because they’re vulnerable.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Bimini discussed what it was like to know they were non-binary from a young age. They said: “I always know that I was neither here nor there – like I was in between. That’s how I’ve always felt.”

Since appearing on the show, Bimini has wasted no time in building their drag empire and even branching out into other media. Bimini’s book A Drag Queen’s Guide To Life is set to go on sale in October, and they promised a new single to be dropped later this month during their Evening Standard interview.

In March, Bimini Bon Boulash was signed to work with major modelling agency Next Model Management. Bimini announced the move on Instagram, saying the opportunity is a “huge, crazy, mind-blowing moment for my gender non-conforming ass”. They added it also a “huge” moment for “non-binary representation in fashion”.
