The much-anticipated inauguration of president-elect Joe Biden and vice president-elect Kamala Harris will place on 20 January 2021 in Washington DC.
Biden is set to give a speech (otherwise known as an inaugural address) at the event, which will be much smaller than previous inaugurations due to the ongoing pandemic.
In a fairly historic snub, outgoing president Donald Trump won’t be attending the inauguration, he’s already left the city. However, it’s unlikely he’ll be missed as Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez and an inspirational trans LA choir are among the stellar lineup who will be performing. And the good news is you can watch the ceremony from home in the UK via a live stream. Here’s everything you need to know about the event, including what time it kicks off, and how to watch.
What time is the inauguration today?
The ceremony is set to begin at 11.30am ET, which is 4.30pm in the UK. It will be held at Washington D.C’s Capitol Building and Joe Biden and Kamala Harris being sworn in at midday – 5pm in the UK.
How to watch the inauguration live stream.
BBC One will be putting out rolling coverage of the inauguration via a two-hour news special, which starts at 3.30pm on Wednesday (20 January). BBC journalist Katty Kay will be presenting the coverage.
ITV will also be running coverage in the form of an inauguration special presented by Tom Bradby from 4pm.
Coverage of the inauguration proceedings will also be airing on Sky News from 4pm. The US channel PBS have been running a live stream on their YouTube channel since early this morning, showing Donald Trump leaving the White House as a sort of ongoing trailer, accompanied by various tracks, most of which have been gay anthems like Tiny Dancer and the YMCA.
What to expect and who is performing.
The event will start at 4.30pm with a performance of the US national anthem, followed by a traditional invocation. After that, just before 5pm, vice president-elect Kamala Harris will be sworn in by Supreme Court justice Sonia Sotomayor.
After that, president-elect Joe Biden will be sworn in by chief justice John Roberts, then Biden will deliver his inaugural speech, followed by the Pass in Review, where the new president assesses the troops.

Next on the agenda is a trip to Arlington National Cemetery with Barack Obama, George W Bush and Bill Clinton to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier – Trump notable for his absence.
The evening will be marked by performances and music from a wide range of celebrities, including Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez. Justin Timberlake, Demi Lovato and Jon Bon Jovi are also set to make an appearance.
