‘Ghost in the Cell’ Teaser – A Ghost Haunts a Prison in Joko Anwar’s Horror-Comedy

A deadly prison riot breaks out in the teaser trailer for Ghost in the Cell, playing below via Variety.

The supernatural horror-comedy is written and directed by Indonesian master of horror Joko Anwar (Satan’s Slaves, Impetigore).

Set within an Indonesian correctional facility, the film follows inmates whose survival instincts are tested when a mysterious new prisoner arrives accompanied by a supernatural entity that targets those with the darkest aura. As deaths mount, the incarcerated population discovers that collective action may be their only path to survival.

The teaser previews that the ghost turns its victims into macabre art installations.

Abimana Aryasatya, Lukman Sardi, Bront Palarae, Aming, Rio Dewanto, Morgan Oey, and Tora Sudiro lead the ensemble cast.

“Beneath its supernatural surface lies something very real: the massive deforestation in Indonesia and the way this destruction is too often met with silence or neglect,” said Anwar. “The ghost in this film is not only a presence haunting the cells, but also a reminder of consequences we choose not to face.”

Anwar and Tia Hasibuan produce through their Jakarta-based Come and See Pictures, alongside Rapi Films, South Korea’s Barunson E&A (who is also handling international sales), and Legacy Pictures.

Ghost in the Cell will have its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival in Germany next month.
