Biggest Changes Between Musical, Movies
Warning: This story contains spoilers from Wicked, Wicked: For Good as well as the Broadway musical.
The Yellow Brick Road is paved with changes.
Those changes were all over when it came to adapting Wicked for the big screen, with part one hitting theaters in 2024 and its sequel Wicked: For Good being released in November 2025—and picking up seven Critics Choice Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress for Ariana Grande and Best Costume Design, among others.
And both films took some liberties with their source material, the 2003 Broadway musical Wicked, itself an adaptation of Gregory Maguire‘s 1995 book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.
With the release of Wicked in 2024, fans were treated to act one of the musical, which—despite its run time being almost twice that of the show’s first act—changed very little in terms of story and music.
