Polish MEP filmed destroying LGBTQ+ exhibition in parliament

Grzegorz Braun has been filmed destroying an exhibition dedicated to LGBTQ+ people.

Polish Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Grzegorz Braun has been filmed destroying an exhibition dedicated to LGBTQ+ people in the Sejm, the lower house of the Polish parliament.

Footage circulating on social media shows MEP Grzegorz Braun taking rainbow-coloured graphics from easels and trampling on them until there were none left on display.

The MEP was asked by journalists, who surrounded him all recording on different devices, what he was doing, he replied: “I prevent public scandal”.

“Please don’t destroy the exhibition. I call you to order. You are destroying property,” an officer of the marshal guard present on the spot said to Braun, as reported by Onet Warszawa.

As reported by Polish cable network TVN24, the incident saw speaker of the Sejm, Marshal Szymon Hołownia , announce that Braun would be banned from entry to the Sejm.

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski wrote on X: “As a former Speaker of the Sejm, I do not understand why the Speaker’s Guard did not once again catch deputy Braun red-handed in the act of destroying private property.”

Shortly after Braun’s outburst the boards were straightened and put back on display.

According to TVP World, this isn’t Braun’s first controversial stunt. In March, he spray-painted over photographs at an LGBTQ+ exhibition in Opole, southern Poland. In December 2023, he used a fire extinguisher to extinguish candles lit in the Polish parliament to mark the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah.

In April this year, Poland officially abolished its last remaining “LGBT-free” zone in a win for queer rights, six years after the policy was first introduced.
