Queer singer Fletcher’s new song about kissing a boy divides fans

Queer singer-songwriter Fletcher has revealed she “fell in love” with a man on the lyrics of her new single “Boy”, and her legion of lesbian fans are firmly divided.

On the lyrics of “Boy”, released yesterday (5 June), the 31-year-old singer reveals that she kissed a man at a party celebrating New Year’s Eve 2024.

Over dreamy acoustic pop, she explains that she has spent the past six months “hiding out” in California with her “secret”, for fear of what her large lesbian fanbase will think of her.

“We were counting down, the music stopped, we were waiting for the ball to drop. I closed my eyes and I leaned in, I kissed a boy,” she reveals on the sparse pre-chorus.

The country-tinged chorus then reflects on her worries about how her fandom may perceive her new relationship.

“And I know it’s not what you wanted to hear, and it wasn’t on your bingo card this year. Well, it wasn’t on mine. I fell in love, and it wasn’t with who I thought it would be, and I’m scared to think of what you’ll think of me,” she belts.

Though Fletcher – real name Cari Elise Fletcher – has always described her sexuality as queer rather than lesbian, she’s garnered a strong, sapphic following since dropping her debut single “War Paint” in 2015.

The bulk of her songs about love and sexuality have focussed on her relationships with women, including “Girls Girls Girls”, “She Said”, “Becky’s So Hot”, and “Cherry”, with “lesbian Jesus” singer-songwriter, Hayley Kiyoko.

The lyrics of the second verse of “Boy” see Fletcher address how she feels about her sexuality now.

“I’ll admit I don’t know how to label it. You can think that I’m a hypocrite, that’s cool. I’m just following my heart, is what it is,” she sings.

“And only time will tell if I will or won’t do this again. Maybe I’ve changed or maybe it’s just him. But I leaned in and kissed a boy.”

Speaking to Rolling Stone following the release of the song, Fletcher reaffirmed that she still identifies as queer.

“There will be people that feel disappointed and feel confused and have questions,” she said.

“Girl, I had questions and I was confused too. It shocked me just as much as anybody else.

“I am so proud to be queer. That is not something that has ever wavered or changed. Being queer for me is this lens that I get to view life through.”

Asked whether she and the man she kissed are still together, the singer coyly said: “I am getting to experience love again. That is the most magical feeling in the entire world. I met a boy who is somehow way more connected to his feelings and his emotions and his heart than even I am.”

On social media, the Fletcher fandom can only be described as completely split down the middle.

Some of her staunch fans have expressed fear that Fletcher’s revelation could be used against queer women in an increasingly anti-LGBTQ+ climate.

“Dating a man doesn’t make them not a queer woman, I’m going to be very clear about that. They can be whatever they want to be,” said one fan on TikTok, speaking about Fletcher and fellow singer Jojo Siwa, who recently started dating Love Island star Chris Huges after previously identifying as a lesbian.

“Unfortunately in 2025, specially under the current [Trump] administration, I think this can be used as ammunition to say, ‘Oh see, there’s still a chance, you just haven’t met the right boy yet.’”

The TikToker, and other Fletcher fans, also criticised the star’s more “soft” and “calm” aesthetic in the “Boy” visualiser and song, compared to the more “wild” nature of her previous releases, such as “Becky So Hot”. Others are unimpressed that the song was released at the start of Pride month.

A bulk of Fletcher’s queer fans have leapt to her defence, however, and urged that any disappointment about the star’s new relationship stems from biphobia.

“It’s so f**ked up that fletcher who has always only ever identified as queer has had to apologise for being with a guy. Let her live,” wrote one fan.

“The biphobia directed at Fletcher after she just dropped her new song is disgusting especially during Pride month?? It’s not cute.”

Fletcher’s new song “Boy” is taken from her upcoming album Would You Still Love Me If You Really Knew Me?, set for release on 18 July.
