Netflix’s Tudum included huge announcements – Knives Out 3: Wake Up Dead Man and Stranger Things 5, for example – but Lady Gaga and Wednesday’s Jenna Ortega stole the show.
Lady Gaga performed a medley of songs to a screaming crowd in Los Angeles on Sunday (June 1) – she emerged from a coffin plastered with the words: “Here lies the monster queen.”
As the closing act, Gaga (dressed in a cloak of red, vampiric roses) performed her singles “Abracadabra” and “Zombieboy” from her new album Mayhem. The tracks also included an version of the original Addams Family theme song.
In the gap between songs, Jenna Ortega (who stars as the eponymous Wednesday Addams in Netflix’s Wednesday) stepped out on the stage and walked to the dining table set before Gaga stood on the table and performed “Abracadabra” surrounded by dancers.
After the wild success of the Addams Family Netflix adaptation, Wednesday‘s debut season was soon renewed for season two. The first season also garnered TikTok success after a sped-up remix of Gaga’s Born This Way single “Bloody Mary” became a viral TikTok trend. Users used Gaga’s song to recreate Ortega’s Wednesday Dance – the original song from the show was the Cramps’ “Goo Goo Muck.”
In a rather meta move, during the Netflix event, it was confirmed that Mother Monster will appear in the second season of Wednesday. She will star as Rosaline Rotwood, “a legendary Nevermore teacher who crosses paths with Wednesday,” though her character won’t appear until the season’s second half.
It is Gaga’s first acting role following her portrayal of DC supervillain Harley Quinn in the critically panned Joker: Folie à Deux, alongside Joaquin Phoenix.
“Love u lady”
After the performance, both Gaga and Ortega posted an image of themselves in the coffin.
Gaga tagged Ortega and wrote: “love u lady.” While Ortega posted: “Nothing compares to you .. x”
Wednesday follows Ortega as the Addams Family daughter in her time as a student at Nevermore Academy. However, season two is set to unlock a new level of mystery.
Lady Gaga will join Jenna Ortega, Haley Joe Osment as a serial killer called the Kansas City Scalper, Catherine Zeta-Jones as Addams matriarch Morticia, Luiz Guzmán as Wednesday’s dad Gomez, Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley, Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo as Sheriff Deputy Ritchie Santiago and more.
According to Deadline, additions to the cast include Billie Piper as Capri, Steve Buscemi as Barry Dort, Evie Templeton, Owen Painter, and Noah Taylor.
In a new clip of the first six minutes of season two, Ortega’s voiceover states, “It’s been an eventful summer.” She’s seen tied up in a serial killer’s basement, surrounded by creepy dolls.
Six weeks earlier, Wednesday is seen spending her summer trying to get her mysterious psychic abilities “under control” as she grows obsessed with serial killers – specifically, the Kansas City Scalper.
Wednesday Season 2 release date
Wednesday season two is dropping in two parts; Part 1 is coming to Netflix on 6 August, and Part 2 will hit the platform 3 September.
