We Talked To People Coming Out Of An IMAX Screening About What They Loved, And There Were Some Recurring Themes
Not every theater experience is the same. Forget going to different multi-plexes. There’s even great variance within the same locations nowadays, as patrons can choose between standard formats, premium formats and all kinds of other options. IMAX is, of course, the most famous of those premium format options; so, we partnered with the industry leader and AMC Theatres to interview people coming out of a screening and ask why they upgraded their tickets.
We ended up talking to more than twenty people, and while each person had their own specific reasons for preferring IMAX, there was also a more general recurring theme: it’s better. That might sound very vague, but the people we talked to were very specific about what they think is better. Some talked about the sound. Some talked about the color. Some talked about how crisp the picture is. Some talked about the collective of all those things making the presentation feel fuller. You can watch some of the people we interviewed below…
A lot of people we talked to also focused on the immersive experience. The goal of watching a movie is to get lost in the story. It’s typically easier to do that at a movie theater than at home, and it’s even easier to do it when watching in IMAX. The immersive experience of watching a movie in IMAX – from the crystal clear images to dynamic sound – make you feel like you’re in the movie. You can also feel that camaraderie with the crowd around you. You don’t need to know them or be a similar type of person. You just need to share the experience.
That cuts across genres too. We talked to one lady who told us how much she loves IMAX for a wide variety of movies, whether they be adventures or romances or mysteries or comedies. IMAX is able to upgrade all of those experiences because, despite what you may have heard, the goal isn’t always to make it louder or scarier or more chaotic. The goal is to enhance the film in whatever way is best for each individual film, which is why IMAX has started working directly throughout the filmmaking process with the directors themselves.
Fortunately for all of us, IMAX has a ton of fantastic movies you can get lost in all summer. In May, they’re rolling out Thunderbolts, Final Destination: Bloodlines and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. All were filmed for IMAX and were worked on collaboratively with the filmmakers and the premium format leader to get the best and most immersive presentation possible.
