Katy Perry reveals what she sang while she was in space

Katy Perry after the Blue Origin space mission

Katy Perry is teasing new music after touching back down on Earth following a visit to space today (Monday 14 April).

The ‘Firework’ singer was part of an all-female crew that boarded the Blue Origin New Shepard space flight belonging to Jeff Bezos.

Also on board was TV presenter Gayle King and Bezos’ fiancé, Lauren Sanchez. They were joined by former NASA rocket scientist, Aisha Bowe, activist Amanda Nguyen, and film producer Kerianne Flynn.

The flight took off from West Texas at around 14:30 UK time and landed back at about 14:45.

King said “the best part” of the experience was when Perry sang Louis Armstrong’s ‘What a Wonderful World’.

“‘She said it’s not about me, I wanted to talk about the world’,” King added.

After getting back onto solid ground, Perry held up a small daisy she had taken into space with her. She then knelt down and kissed the ground.

Speaking afterward Perry said she feels “super connected to love.” She continued saying “you never know how much love is inside of you. How much love you have to give and how loved you are until the day you launch.”

As per Sky News, she also explained her reasoning behind taking a daisy, also her daughter’s name, to space. She said it was because they are “strong,” “powerful,” and “resilient” flowers.

On why she chose Armstrong’s classic to sing, the ‘Firework’ singer said she’d covered it before and “obviously my higher self is always steering the ship.” She added: “It’s not about me or about me singing my songs, it was about a collective energy in there. It’s about us, it’s about making space for future women. And taking up space and belonging. And it’s this wonderful world that we see right out there and appreciating it. This is all for the benefit of Earth.”

She also said that she will be writing new music after this experience adding: “It was the highest high.”

The decision to send this group into space has come under criticism. In part this is due to it being seen as an advert for Bezos’ space tourism ambitions. It also comes at a particularly tense time for the world what with wars, poverty, and economic instability causing havoc, to say the least, around the world.
