Bowen Yang and Lily Gladstone Star in ‘The Wedding Banquet’ Trailer

The romantic comedy will be released in theaters on April 18

The first trailer for Bowen Yang and Lily Gladstone’s remake of the 1993 queer comedy The Wedding Banquet is here and it doesn’t disappoint.

Based on Ang Lee’s 1993 film, The Wedding Banquet stars Yang and Gladstone alongside Kelly Marie Tran and Han Gi-chan. The film shows the dynamics of two couples navigating their own sets of obstacles. Angela (Kelly Marie Tran) and Lee (Gladstone) are trying to have a baby through IVF but are struggling to pay for more treatments while Min (Han Gi-chan) needs to get married to stay in the United States but his boyfriend Chris (Bowen Yang) rejects the proposal. Angela agrees to marry Min for his green card status and Min agrees to fund Lee’s IVF. But their elopement goes awry when Min’s conservative grandmother flies into Seattle from Korea and throws her closeted grandson a traditional wedding.

The Wedding Banquet, which is being distributed by Bleecker Street film company, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on Monday. The film’s director Andrew Ahn told Variety ahead of the movie’s Sundance premiere that he saw the original version of The Wedding Banquet when he was just eight years old.

“We rented it not knowing it was a gay film. As a nascent gay boy, it was mind-blowing. That was the first time I saw a gay character on screen. And it was a gay Asian character. It really set up my life in many ways,” Ahn said. The director continued to explain that he was excited to remake the film once he conceptualized that “there was a new version of the story we could tell.”

“We can get married. Now that we can get married, should we? Do we want to? As a millennial, there’s this burden of choice. It shifts the generational focus, and it’s looking toward the future,” he explained.

The Wedding Banquet will hit theaters on April 18.
