Chevrolet Discontinuing Once Popular Model, Laying Off Workers

For 60 years, Chevrolet has made the popular Malibu sedan. In a few weeks, that will stop, and the people who make them will be laid off.

Chevrolet has announced that it will cease production of their once most popular model, the Chevy Malibu.

At one point in time the Malibu was so popular it was the model of choice for most police forces, as well as a popular choice for companies and their fleets as well as taxi cabs across America.

But despite that we’ll have to pour one out for the Malibu, because it’s officially dunzo.

The fact of the matter is that most people in America aren’t choosing to drive sedans anymore, they are going with SUVs and crossover SUVs. With our busier lifestyles and growing families, the need for a ride with some more space is proving to be the more popular way to go.

One of the most unfortunate things about losing the Chevy Malibu is the loss of the jobs of the people who made the once popular model for GM.

It will effect over 600 employees of the main Chevy Malibu plant in Virginia, according to a report by CBT News. The layoffs will begin Nov. 18.

Tim Healey, a car enthusiast, shared his opinions on Chevrolet’s decision on The Truth About Cars, saying Chevy will now be without an “affordable and fuel-efficient” sedan option on the market.

Healey took shots at GM by saying, “GM Shooting Itself in Foot By Killing Chevrolet Malibu.”

Healey says that it’s a short-sighted decision because the fact that people are buying crossovers right now, might not be the case in the future. “Some folks just would rather spend less money than a crossover might command.”

One user on X wrote, “So the Chevy Malibu is being discontinued. The f—ing Malibu, one of the most iconic sedans ever made. I have never hated SUV’s more.”

Other users highlighted the fact that after November, the only car that Chevy will be selling is the Corvette. Think about that. The brand that once was built on muscle cars, now will sell everything but that, with one exception.

At least country music still has the Chevy trucks to sing about. As Chevrolet trucks have been a staple in country music for a long time. Most recently, Dierks Bentley‘s “Gold” and Dustin Lynch’s collaboration with Jelly Roll, “Chevrolet.”
