Lucky McKee’s ‘The Woman’ Explores the Dangers of Civilized Society [The Lady Killers Podcast]

“Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”

In 1980, outlaw horror author Jack Ketchum published one of the most gruesome and disturbing horror novels of all time. Off Season follows a group of friends vacationing at a picturesque cottage in Maine targeted by a clan of feral cannibals living deep in the woods. Offspring picks up the story ten years later as the feral family terrorizes a sleepy town. Writer/director Lucky McKee continues the story with The Woman, a harrowing film which reverses the concept of predator and prey. In collaboration with Ketchum, McKee follows the sole survivor of this cannibalistic clan as she tangles with a country lawyer who may be worse than anything lurking in the remote wilderness.

Chris Cleek (Sean Bridgers) is hunting in the woods near his house when he spies a Woman (Pollyanna McIntosh) bathing in the river. Viewing his own lifestyle as superior, he traps and imprisons her in a modified cellar and enlists his horrified family in domesticating the wildling. But who is the true monster? Is it the woman who eschews traditional gender roles and lives by her wits in the dangerous woods or the man who rules his home with a brutal combination of violence and fear?

The Lady Killers continue Back to School month with McKee’s shocking film. Co-hosts Jenn Adams, Sammie Kuykendall, Rocco Thompson, and Mae Shults will dust off their Myspace playlists, look up the definition of anophthalmia, and plead with a naive teacher to stay at school. How does a story of horrific domestic violence differ when told by a man? Which of Chris’s “punishments” upsets them the most? Does anyone actually like to wear dresses and what just came out of this family’s back shed? They’ll munch on some tiny man-shaped cookies while venturing into the woods of the Ketchum universe and falling for McIntosh’s ferocious femme fatale.
