Kim Gordon Drops New Video for Single ‘ECRP’: Watch
Kim Gordon has released a new song, “ECRP,” along with its video. The non-album single follows the release of her second solo album, The Collective.
Like the songs on The Collective, Justin Raisen also produced “ECRP,” which dovetails with the avant-garde, hip-hop, and industrial mélange found on the album despite it not appearing on the LP.
The accompanying video, directed by Coco Gordon Moore, the daughter of the former Sonic Youth cofounder, features a montage of scenes. New York City buildings, textured artwork, barbed wire, and more serve as the complementary backdrop to the industrial, woozy, and beat-buoyed music alongside Gordon’s visceral lyrics. “Vein to the chest/Tubes like garden hose/Pumping in the fresh/To the brain machine,” she sings in a spoken-word, stream-of-consciousness style.
Gordon released The Collective in March. “The songs come off as avant-garde, trap, old-school hip-hop, noisy, or musique concrète depending on where you drop the needle,” Rolling Stone said in the review of her sophomore set.
In a Rolling Stone interview with Gordon, the musician spoke of her solo musical direction and singing approach. “Well, I’m not a natural singer. I know what works for me in the sense of using rhythm and space, and I really do like working off rhythms. I really just wanted to do more of that. I feel much freer in what I’m singing about in a certain way. I don’t feel like I have to hold myself back in some way.”
Gordon is embarking on a U.K. tour, which begins tonight, June 25, in London at Koko. She will perform at a number of festivals and shows throughout Europe, Australia, and Japan before heading to the U.S. for a short string of dates in August and September, including an appearance at Seattle’s Bumbershoot on Sept. 1 and Ohana Festival in Dana Point, California on Sept. 29.
