Maya Hawke Releases Delicate New Single, ‘Hang In There’

The song follows the release of “Dark” and “Missing Out” from upcoming LP, Chaos Angel

Maya Hawke unpacks toxic love in her latest single “Hang in There,” from her upcoming album, Chaos Angel, set to release on May 31 via Mom+Pop.

“He said, he could see through to your core/You thought, his heart was open like yours,” sings Hawke in the opening verse, before detailing a story of a relationship sowed with doubt and violence. For the chorus, the musician delivers bittersweet words of comfort: “He’s gonna get away with it/I know, I’ve been there/You’re gonna get the hang of it/Hang on, hang in there.”

In a statement, Hawke explained that the idea behind the new track “is when you have someone close to you, who’s going through something awful that you’ve been through earlier in your life, and you know that you can’t interfere because they’ll probably isolate themselves from you.” She continued, “So you have to just watch as they get really hurt. Until they have that moment where they realize they’ve been in a toxic situation all along. Then they come to you, and together, you help them emerge from it. It’s a moment of real happiness when you can witness the pieces all click into place.”

“Hang in There” follows the release of “Dark” and “Missing Out,” with all three offering insight into her upcoming LP. Chaos Angel is Hawke’s third album and will span 10 songs, during which Hawke “catalogs upheavals, revelations, foibles, and broken promises, all while navigating the patterns we repeat while growing older, wandering astray, and finding our way back to some core understanding of ourselves.”
