Watch Jelly Roll Perform ‘Halfway to Hell’
Jelly Roll returned to the CMT Music Awards at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas, on Sunday and took home three trophies, including Video of the Year, Male Video of the Year, and CMT Performance of the Year.
The star also wrapped the ceremony with a rousing performance of “Halfway to Hell” from his seventh solo studio album, Whitsitt Chapel. While surrounded by smoke and plumes of fire, Jelly Roll belted out the lyrics: “My angels and demons at war with myself/One foot in the fire and I still can’t tell/Am I halfway to heaven or hell?”
“Need a Favor” was released in December 2022 and within just a few months was sent to country radio, where it eventually reached Number One on the US Country Airplay chart via Billboard. It also appeared on Whitsitt Chapel, released in June 2023.
Last year, Jelly Roll took home all three awards he was nominated for at the 2023 CMT Music Awards including Male Video of the Year and Male Breakthrough Video of the Year for “Son of a Sinner.” He was also awarded CMT Digital-First Performance of the Year for his CMT All Access performance of the record, which was released as the second single from his 2021 album Ballads of the Broken.
The 2024 CMT Music Awards, hosted by Kelsea Ballerini, featured a stacked slate of performers. Ballerini, Brittney Spencer, Megan Moroney, Cody Johnson, Parker McCollum, Bailey Zimmerman, Dasha, Keith Urban, Lainey Wilson, Jordan Davis, Old Dominion, Sam Hunt, Little Big Town, Sugarland, and more were all booked for the show.
