Patti Smith Hospitalized Following Sudden Illness and Canceled Show

The artist was scheduled to perform in Bologna, Italy on Tuesday night

Patti Smith was hospitalized in Bologna, Italy on Tuesday due to a sudden illness, according to Italian news outlet TGCOM24. The 76-year-old musician was in the city to perform a concert at Teatro Duse, but the venue shared an Instagram Story announcing the cancellation of the show.

“With great regret, we inform the kind audience that the Patti Smith concert scheduled for today … will not be able to be staged due to a sudden illness that struck the artist,” the venue wrote in Italian.

Representatives for Smith did not immediately respond to Rolling Stone‘s request for comment. TGCOM24 reported that the artist was discharged from the Maggiore hospital in Bologna after medical evaluation. She was also active on Instagram earlier today, sharing an Instagram Story unrelated to the incident.

“We are all sorry for the inconvenience caused by this news,” venue representatives continued in their social media statement. “Our best wishes go to the artist for a speedy recovery.”

Smith’s upcoming concert appearance in Venice on Dec. 14 has also been canceled as well as a signing event in Milan scheduled for Friday, Dec. 15. The shows were part of an eight-night tour through Italy, which began in November with concerts in Ancona, Bari, Naples, and Modena. Smith is still currently scheduled to perform in Chicago and Brooklyn later this month.

Earlier this year, Smith appeared as a surprise guest at the Music of Paul McCartney charity concert hosted at New York’s Carnegie Hall. She wasn’t part of the official bill, but appeared midway through the show to perform a rendition of the 1967 Beatles classic “She’s Leaving Home” for the first time.
