Why Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Will Be in New York City on July 18
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are returning to the public eye for just a day. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are set to visit New York City next Monday, although there is a chance they could arrive early to enjoy the city privately. A spokesperson for the United Nations told Entertainment Tonight that Meghan and Harry will attend a grand celebration at the United Nations building for Nelson Mandela Day. Harry is also expected to deliver a speech during the event, the outlet added.
Harry and Meghan last visited New York City publicly in September. And while they have generally been under-the-radar, living quietly in Montecito, CA, Meghan and Harry got considerable media attention when they traveled to the U.K. last month for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee events. It was the first time the couple brought their daughter Lilibet to England and also the first time Meghan and Archie returned since Meghan and Harry stepped back from their senior royal family member roles in 2020.
The couple purposely kept a low profile during their visit, a source who knows Meghan and Harry told People in June.
“They aren’t part of the [working] royal family anymore, and that’s a decision they have taken—but maybe [the public] hasn’t quite accepted that yet,” a source said, acknowledging some believed Meghan and Harry should’ve been out at more events. “Yes, they were low-key. They paid their respects and went home.”
“They were really here to see the Queen, and they did,” the source added.
