Acclaimed director Jordan Peele kept the premise and details of his new film Nope pretty quiet since since his plans for the project were revealed in February 2021. Fans have been anticipating it ever since, even without much to hold them over. They knew the movie would star Daniel Kaluuya, who won an Oscar nomination for his performance in Peele’s film Get Out.
The trailer, out now, shows Kaluuya co-starring with Keke Palmer as two cattle ranchers who work with horses and who aspire to be on-set animal handlers for TV and films. It seems like Kaluuya’s character is less enthusiastic about the project, while Palmer’s is a show woman eager to let everyone know of her ancestral connection to the first recorded film of a Black man riding a horse to promote her business. Then, one night, an ominous cloud spreads across the plains and seems to turn off the electricity in their home. A montage of other creepy effects, like the air going out of wacky inflatable tube men, carry the trademark mix of horror and humor Peele always brings to his work.
There is one very brief shot that might explain what is going on out there on the ranch, a quick glimpse at what looks like a spaceship in the distant hills before it goes dark. Are the villains here going to be aliens? Or are the real villains the people??
At one point, Kaluuya’s character asks, “What’s a bad miracle? We got a word for that?”
Other cast members include Steven Yeun, Barbie Ferreira, Brandon Perea, and Michael Wincott. Yeun appears to working for a rodeo in the clips, but not much information can be gleaned about our other characters.
Peele wrote, produced, and directed Nope along with producer Ian Cooper and executive producer Robert Graf. It’s set to hit theaters on July 22, and it really looks like it’s worth the wait.
