Why Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet Decided to Break Up After 16 Years: ‘They Wanted to Live Different Lives’
Longtime Hollywood couple Lisa Bonet and Jason Momoa shocked everyone when they announced on social media that they were separating after 16 years together. Sources spoke to Entertainment Tonight and Us Weekly about what led to the decision.
Us‘s source said it was due to personality differences, the same thing that attracted to them to each other when they first started dating in 2005. “Jason and Lisa worked because they were so different,” the source said. “He was jovial, loud and the center of attention, and Lisa was always cool, calm and subdued.”
“That energy really started to cause friction because they wanted to live different lives,” the insider continued. “Jason wanted to travel and adventure much more. Lisa, she would rather read, write poetry, and cook at home.”
Entertainment Tonight‘s source added that distance was a contributing factor in the split. “Jason and Lisa were struggling in their relationship for quite some time,” that source said. “When Jason was away filming Aquaman 2, their differences and issues were heightened. He was gone for a while and it definitely put additional stress on their relationship. [They] still have love for each other and respect one another.”
The couple announced the breakup in a joint statement Momoa posted on his Instagram, as Bonet doesn’t have social media accounts, per People. (The post has since been deleted.) The couple married in October 2017 and have two children together, 14-year-old Lola and 13-year-old Nakoa-Wolf.
Their joint statement read:
