Yes, I Will Be Watching Gong Yoo in Space
If your biggest critique of Squid Game was “not enough Gong Yoo,” then please direct your attention—if you haven’t already—to The Silent Sea, the upcoming Netflix sci-fi drama that features the Train to Busan star in the lead role. While he doesn’t slap unknowing citizens in his well-tailored suits, he does brave the dangers of cosmic travel in a space suit, which might trigger your thirst just the same.
The official trailer just dropped yesterday, previewing a thrilling mystery adventure. “Set in a future Earth that has undergone desertification, The Silent Sea is the story of the members of a special team sent to secure a mysterious sample from an abandoned research facility on the moon,” Netflix’s logline reads. But what they find when they get there seems to change the nature of their entire mission altogether. The eight-episode series starts streaming Dec. 24, just in time for your holiday binge.
Bae Doona (The Host, Stranger, Kingdom, Sense8) stars as astrobiologist Doctor Song Ji-an, who’s determined to uncover the truth behind an accident at the now-abandoned Balhae Base research station on the moon, per Netflix. Gong Yoo plays plays Han Yun-jae, the exploration team leader and Lee Joon (My Father Is Strange, Luck-Key) is head engineer Captain Ryu Tae-seok, formerly of the Ministry of National Defense. Other familiar faces appear in the preview like Squid Game’s Heo Sung-tae (who played the gangster Jang Deok-su) and Kim Sun-young of Crash Landing On You and Netflix’s Romance Is a Bonus Book, to name a few.
The Silent Sea is directed by Choi Hang Yong, who also directed a short film of the same name, and written by Park Eunkyo, who wrote Bong Joon Ho’s film Mother. Actor Jung Woo-sung is an executive producer.
