The PS5 Will Be Getting a Successor to PSVR
PlayStation’s Jim Ryan has revealed that the PS5 will get a successor to PSVR in the future that will be a very different setup to the company’s original attempt at joining the Virtual Reality circus.
In an announcement on the PS Blog, and during an interview with GQ, Ryan stated this will be a whole new VR format, with just the one cord planned to connect it to the console (among the biggest bugbears with PSVR was the plethora of wires you could easily trip over).
There’s nothing concrete on specs and design otherwise, just the assurance Sony has learned from its first attempt at VR. It will, however, utilize the nifty tricks of the PS5’s DualSense controller.
Ryan confirmed the new hardware would not be releasing this year, but assured players that we’ll see more on it at some point in the near future.
PSVR did a modest job of bringing the VR gaming experience to the masses. Horror games have thrived on the hardware, with an exclusive VR version of Resident Evil 7 chief among them. It would be great if a sleeker, more immersive, and affordable PSVR brought the medium to an even wider audience, and especially if it truly kicked virtual reality horror into a new gear.
